BELMOND NORTHERN BELLE
History & Story
When Belmond Northern Belle was launched in 2000, she became the newest member of the Belmond family of luxury trains. Ten former railway carriages were re-engineered at Crewe, in Cheshire, and have been transformed into six individual, resplendent dining cars, two kitchen cars and two service cars. As the sister to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, and named in honour of the ‘Belle’ trains of the 1930s, she shares the same passion for heritage and craftsmanship, while revelling in the bygone era of the Golden Age of travel. The name and concept of the Pullman cars, and indeed luxury train travel, dates from the 1860s, when American industrialist George Mortimer Pullman grew tired of riding on uncomfortable trains. He engineered comfortably sprung railroad sleeping and dining cars with all the luxurious facilities of a hotel. Following in the tradition of the Pullmans, today each unique carriage offers a sublimely elegant and comfortable way to travel, with fine wines and cuisine being served in intimate surrounding with service rarely seen nowadays. The train departs from more than 65 stations across Great Britain, travelling through spectacular countryside to cities such as Edinburgh York and Bath, as well as castles, gardens, stately homes and prestigious events. Surely there can be no mode of travel more splendid sumptuous and suited to exploring the beauty of Britain.
