PLACES OF MONACO

MONACO VILLE
Symbolic capital of the City-state, Monaco-Ville is the historical heart of the Principality. The narrow streets of the highest Monegasque district, called “The Rock” by the locals, are the beginning of the legend of the Grimaldi dynasty, when, in 1297, Francois Grimaldi – nicknamed “Malizia” – take over the fortress, leading a small company of armed men disguised as Franciscans monks. Still today, in testimonial to this founding event, the Monaco coat of arms pictures a monk with a sword.

The Palace is the Prince’s residence, and the change of guards can be watched every day at 11:55 am on the front square. It is relatively quick to take a full tour of the district, and yet, not difficult to spend a full day there. On the edge of a cliff, in front of the Mediterranean, lays the Oceanographic Museum, main attraction for the visitors, no matter if they are here for a day or more. A little bit higher in the district, stands the Monaco Cathedral, where numerous visitor come to pay their homage to the passed Princes and Princesses. Mandatory visit for anyone coming to the Principality, Monaco-Ville overlooks all Monaco and is the living memory of the smallest country in the world.
