BULL SCULPTURE AT THE RED BULL RING
The sculpture took a year and a half to build and was completed in May 2012. The full sculp-ture (including the arch) is 17 metres 20 in height, and the bull itself 14 metres 60. The bull consists of a “skin” made of approximately 1,700 welded plates made of COR-TEN steel (a non-rusting steel that develops a rust-like appearance on the surface), supported by a framework made of untreated steel and shaped like a bull’s skeleton. The combined weight of the bull and skeleton is 68 tonnes. The base is made of 44 tonnes of steel cast in 950 tonnes of concrete. The arch is a self-supporting structure made of 83 aluminium pieces produced using the lost-foam casting process (total weight: approximately 32 tonnes). These were welded into 20 segments comprising four to six pieces each and then bolted together. The positive moulds for the casting process were made of special gasifying Styropor, milled by a robot in accordance with CAD files. The cast-aluminium horn measures seven metres from tip to tip and is gold plated using the leaf-gilding method – still the most durable form of surface coating for open air purposes. How-ever, the amount of gold is roughly only equivalent to a single Vienna Philharmonic coin. The total weight of the sculpture, including all its parts, is approximately 1,300 tonnes.
