Luxury Safari Lodge & Camp
Chem Chem is, in essence, a love story. It is one of open spaces, big skies and the shared dream of owners Fabia and Nicolas. Both of them envisioned a conservation haven where all – the wildlife, the people, the land – would be respected. That dream became a reality in the form of the Chem Chem – Burunge Wildlife Management Area (WMA), a place of boundless beauty between the Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks. Chem Chem is testimony to their shared vision and values. The merging of Fabia and Nicolas’ different paths has resulted in a place that is both beautiful and purposeful.
Chem Chem Philanthropy & Safaris
History & Story
Enveloped within 20 000 hectares (55 000 acres) of raw, untainted African bush lies the Chem Chem – Burunge (WMA), with secluded, elegant tent-style accommodation at two locations: Chem Chem Lodge and Little Chem Chem camp. Both sites are designed to evoke the spirit, luxury and intimacy of a vintage safari experience.
Situated within a luscious palm-island on the western edge of the WMA is 5-star accommodation consisting of an opulent main house and eight secluded tent-style suites. Each suite, (100m2), has been created from a combination of canvas, lava-stones and wood, and are set a minimum of 80 metres apart to ensure complete privacy and feature indoor/outdoor showers, reading corners, dressing rooms, private patios and expansive views.
Known as the sunrise camp, Little Chem Chem lies on the eastern side of the WMA. It offers an authentic vintage safari in an elegant, supremely comfortable tented camp, accommodating a maximum of 14 guests in a game-rich location. Little Chem Chem is all about getting as close to nature as possible, without sacrificing comfort.
Main Strengths, Special Touch
It’s the ultimate safari experience. Make that two. While a stay at either is unforgettable, the combination completes the picture. Each has standalone beauty and unique character offering a range of exceptional experiences, warm East African hospitality and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the land. This is why you should indulge in not one, but both retreats, and fill your senses to the brim.
Enveloped within 20 000 hectares of raw, untainted African bush is the Chem Chem – Burunge WMA, a place of boundless beauty between the Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks. The area is an ancient migratory route for animals to freely roam. The luxurious safari sanctuary allows visitors to slow down to age-old rhythms and embrace the ‘Out-of-Africa’ atmosphere.

Opportunities to immerse yourself in the culture abound and for a more active experience, run across the plains with the Maasai before a restorative massage at the spa or sundowner on the shores of Lake Manyara and Burunnge ahead of dinner, held in a different location each night. Families will create unforgettable memories and celebrations are made truly memorable. A photographer’s playground, discover the natural beauty of Tanzania at Chem Chem Lodge.
* The ‘Pink’ season is so called for the enormous flock of crimson-legged, pink-feathered Lesser Flamingos that migrate between the alkaline lakes of the Great Rift Valley – in which Chem Chem Wildlife Concession lies. Approximately 2.5 million flamingos travel together
* ‘SAFARI’ means ‘going on a long journey’ in Swahili.
* Little Chem Chem is surrounded by the characteristic landscape of the Tarangire River with its impressive Baobab trees, whose leaves look like an outstretched hand, as if reaching out in friendship. The Baobab can grow up to 25 meters tall and live for several thousand years
Children aged 8 years and over are welcome at Chem Chem. Lodge Suites & Camp Tents accommodate 1 child sharing with parents. The Chem Chem Lodge Family Suite and Little Chem Chem Family Tent each has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and can accommodate up to 3 children (under 16) and 2 adults. If the Lodge is hired exclusively, children of all ages are welcome. All children must be accompanied by parents/guardians on all safari activities. They will create unforgettable memories by learning bush skills from Maasai warriors: how to make a fire, use a bow and arrow, throw a spear. A visit to local schools and villages will expose them to different cultures. Children can build a recyclable soccer ball, follow wildlife tracks and decorate safari-themed cupcakes.

Extra Notable Features
• Chem Chem Foundation:
Chem Chem is so much more than an intimate wildlife experience – that is just part of what makes up the whole. All around, both seen and unseen, is an intricate ballet of balance between the community and conservation. Philanthropists and conservationists, Nicolas and Fabia are dedicated to ensuring that balance is in place. Their non-profit Chem Chem Foundation, founded in 2008, is a vital cog in the philanthropy wheel. Active engagement and discussion is behind every decision and project. The Chem Chem Foundation encourages the traditional owners of the land to take responsibility for the wellbeing of the habitat, in order to secure its successful future.
The Foundation protects 200 sqkm of untouched wilderness – the Burunge Wildlife Management Area. The area hosts an important wildlife migratory corridor linking the Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks. The corridor was declared inactive in 2009, but has recently come back to life as a result of the Foundation’s involvement. This region is home to much of the wildlife for which Tanzania is famed, including some of the last remaining groups of Africa’s magnificent elephants, the Big Tuskers, who are now free to roam this ancient path.
