The architectural masterpiece showcases the finest European design blended with traditional Arabian elements, a true palace in every sense of the word. From the palatial corridors and public spaces, and the luxurious rooms and suites, to a selection of the finest restaurants and lounges, this hotel has become a benchmark for bespoke luxury in Doha.
MARSA MALAZ KEMPINSKI, THE PEARL – DOHA
History & Story
The longstanding links between Islamic and Venetian architecture provided the catalyst for the design concept that Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB) applied to the Marsa Malaz Kempinski complex, eschewing a theme-based project in favor of an authentic sense of journeying that is specific to both place and time. Nestling adjacent to the Venetian inspired quarter of The Pearl, the resplendent Marsa Malaz occupies its very own island, hovering majestically on the banks of the Arabian Gulf.
Drawing upon the direct influence of the Ottoman traders on the city of Venice, Marsa Malaz Kempinski’s picturesque aggregation of domes evokes the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice and Hagia Sophia in ancient Constantinople (now Istanbul). The vast and airy reception lobby with its soaring central dome is reminiscent of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, whilst the staircase descending to the lower-ground floor is suggestive of the grand staircases of the fabulous Venetian palazzi – such as the one in the courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale.
Over 3,000 different pieces of Arab and European artworks are on display in the rooms and halls of the Marsa Malaz Kempinski. More than 50 impressive chandeliers are reflected in the polished marble floors, notably, the Tree of Life hanging in the resort lobby is a magnificent creation of brass tree-branches adorned with 12 multi-colored hummingbirds.
The finest of all are the four signature Murano-glass chandeliers illuminating the grand staircase: boasting over 44,000 handmade elements crafted by world-famous Murano glass-blowers in Italy, each one is shaped like an oyster shell as a reminder of Qatar’s long heritage of pearl-diving. These resplendent cascades of light are among the resort’s most prized possessions.
