History & Story
Over 20 years exploring remote locations. Founded in 1993, explora is a travel company that owns and operates hotels and Travesias in 6 remote destinations of South America. We propose a new way of traveling based on in-depth explorations of the sorroundings, the luxury of the essential and a sustainable development.
Before the Spaniards arrived, the Inca Empire – also known as Tahuantinsuyo – was one of the most important South American civilizations. It extended over 2,485 miles (4,000 kilometers) from the south of Colombia to the central region of Chile, built a route of about 24,854 miles (40,000 kilometers) and brought together 10 million people under the same political and cultural entity.
The capital of this powerful empire emerged in the heart of the Peruvian Sierra: the city of Cusco, surrounded by majestic mountain landscapes and fertile valleys. From these, Sacred Valley was chosen by the Incas to build some of their most important architectural works and to develop the most complex irrigation terraces that are still used up to this day for growing food.
Located between Cusco and the sacred city of Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley stretches along the Urubamba River and covers different colonial towns still marked by the Inca legacy. It is considered to be the home of the best Peruvian corn grains.
Main Strengths, Special Touch
We offer more than 20 explorations on foot, van or bike, half-day or full day, especially designed to meet each area’s must-see sites, as well as that which lies beyond what is known. We believe that in order to really immerse oneself in this destination, explorations need to take place in all three different areas: the valley, plateau, and mountain peaks.
Key sites/activities in the area
Hikes: Our hikes are designed for travelers with different interests and abilities. They vary in length and difficulty. They take place between 9,186 and 15,419 f.a.s.l, this is why so some of them require prior acclimatization. We always recommend to discuss the exploration with one of our guides to make sure that it suits your preferences.
Bike rides: explora offers the unique opportunity to bike ride along the Sacred Valley landscapes. We provide the equipment to ensure our travelers comfort and safety during the explorations. The use of helmets is mandatory as is also the use of sunglasses, sunscreen and appropriate footwear.
Overland: n the Sacred Valley, we use this means of transport to further explore the legacy of the Incas in the area. In order, to meet the wonders of this valley, we combine the van with hiking. We believe it is necessary to leave the van to truly know.
Our food: We have designed our meals so that our guests can always feel strong and yet lightweight in their different exploration activities.
Based on the luxury of our essentials, we offer authentic flavors using top quality ingredients.
Our policy is to get the best of all products. Our meals will always be matched by a good wine. We also have a premium wine list for those who want to taste alternatives.
