History & Story
« To provide our guests with an experience that can’t be enjoyed anywhere else and is based on local authenticity, spirit and beauty”: this vision has allowed the Melpignano family to help transform Puglia into one of the most sought-after and beloved destinations across the world, starting in 1996 with Masseria San Domenico, originally the family’s private vacation home. Today, Borgo Egnazia is the biggest property of the San Domenico Hotels group.
Main Strengths, Special Touch
Local Adviser : We strongly believe the richness and depth of Puglia can only be effectively presented by Apulian people. Always at your side during your stay at the Borgo, a Local Adviser is a kind of special “local friend” who knows and loves the place and grows an empathic relationship with you, opening closed doors, telling unheard tales, arranging the unexpected, anticipating and fulfilling your wish or curiosity, whether it’s places or exhibits to visit, “off-map” tips, folk traditions and customized experiences.
Discovering Puglia is the beginning of a true experience of love. During the relatively mild fall and winter seasons, a vast choice of produce from the ground, beautiful colours, unique village festivals and ancient traditions is guaranteed, while spring and summer literally make Puglia bloom and burst with events, beach parties and shows.
Key sites/activities in the area
This region is really rich in architectural beauty, from the amazing towns of the Itria Valley (the breath taking “cummerse” houses in Locorotondo or Ostuni, the “White Town”) to the small seafront village of Polignano and Monopoli, and the marvels of the Salento area (the Baroque buildings in Lecce, also known as “the Florence of Southern Italy”, and the measured elegance of Otranto, the easternmost city on the Italian peninsula).
Borgo Egnazia offers a unique type of hospitality, tailormade to every possible need. Our activities will become unforgettable experiences for all of our guests. 2 private beaches: Cala Masciola, which houses BE’s Watersport Center and La Fonte , ideal for families. 4 large outdoor pools and 1 indoor
Borgo Egnazia is the ideal place to spend precious time with your family. Little guests can enter the magical world of Trullalleri, the enchanted kids club, to learn how to make homemade pasta with delicious cooking lessons, have fun riding a bike in the Puglian countryside or play with the animals at Emma and Maria’s farm. The junior guests can be part of the international community of Marinai or Tarantari and spend unforgettable moments of sharing and friendship.
Vair has also created wonderful experiences for parents and children, dedicated to cuddling, learning and relaxation.

• Cala Masciola
Restaurant by the sea in the enchanting bay of Cala Masciola – the private beach of Borgo Egnazia. Here you can breathe the scent of the Mediterranean Sea and taste of the catch of
the day, chosen fresh from the counter as at the fish market, and savoured cooked to your taste or just “raw”, following the Puglian tradition.

This corner full of colours and flavours is a magical and timeless place, where every detail is designed for children, from the chairs to the tables and the buffets. This place combines playing and eating healthy, so that children can have fun together and eat in a genuine way.
• Wine list
Curated by the Wine Experience Manager Giuseppe Cupertino, the winery of Borgo Egnazia counts over 1000 labels, of which 60% represent Puglia’s most authentic wine production.
Great attention is paid to small winemakers, local vine varieties and the most characteristic vintages, with the focus on the raw material, ethic and attitude of each producer.
Besides the section dedicated to Puglia, the wine list features labels from other Italian regions, France and all over the world, and it has been created over time with exclusive rarities and memorable wines personally chosen by the Wine Experience Manager during his experiential journey. Cupertino wants to know the story behind each wine and producer in order to be a storyteller himself, involving the guests emotionally.
• Il Portico”, the great bar of Borgo Egnazia
Il Portico is entirely made of tufo and stones, following the unmistakable style of Borgo Egnazia. The best place for an aperitif at sunset or a cocktail after dinner that will allow guests to try new experiences in the world of cocktails and drinks. The selection has been made by Dario Gentile, the Beverage Director with Puglian blood but international experience (among others, Otto and Mezzo Bombana and Jing An Shangri La Hotel, both in Shanghai). The cocktail collection of Il Portico is inspired by the great classics, all reinterpreted and enriched by the most typical ingredients of Puglia. Every preparation is homemade, created starting from the fruits and aromatic herbs from the garden of Borgo Egnazia or from the Puglian countryside. Just to mention a few: Egnazia Negroni, reinterpretation of the timeless Negroni, prepared with the Egnazia Vermouth Rosso, the first Vermouth with Puglian origins, served in a single ice block featuring Borgo Egnazia’s logo. Another example is Puer Apuliae, a mixture of Campari with an infusion of dried tomato, Egnazia Vermouth Rosso and a hint of burrata from Andria.
At Borgo Egnazia wellbeing is everywhere. Whether it is a relaxing but powerful walk in the morning sun, an afternoon dedicated to discovering the natural beauty of the countryside on a cycle tour, a glass of wine by the sea or a delicious meal prepared with local produce. In this heart-warming place, nestled amongst millennial-old olive trees, everyone is free to find his own equilibrium according to his own taste and needs and everything is designed to ensure guests spend their precious time at their own pace, synchronizing with the Puglian rhythm and the welcoming joy of local people.
