CASTELLO DI VICARELLO
History & Story
Originally built in the 12th century, Castello di Vicarello has been renovated into an urban and modern retreat, offering every comfort and amenity in a peaceful and natural setting. The careful restoration of the castle incorporated clay bricks with original stone work and utilized the original wood beams and terracotta floors. The interior furnishing brings together antique furniture and frescoes, modern design, and decorative elements collected from every corner of the globe. The grounds were an important element of the restoration and were designed by Aurora and Carlo Baccheschi Berti in collaboration with landscape architect Giuppi Pietromarchi. The gardens are maintained to seamlessly blend into the vegetation of the natural reserve that surrounds us. The result is dramatic, yet offers harmony and balance – a multitude of flowers, centuries-old olive trees, lush lavender, jasmine, and other fragrant plants complete the scenery. There are two swimming pools carefully integrated into its surroundings.

Main Strengths, Special Touch
We are a castle hotel from the 12th century located on a mountain top with panoramic quintessential Tuscan viewsoffering ultimate privacy surrounded amongst 40 acres of lush forest and olive groves. The property’s special touch is the unique history of the castle, the family spirit, created by Carlo and Aurora over 25 years, now in the hands of son’s Neri and Brando. The property has many unique and intimate areas for guests both inside and outside the castle, including around both poolsand in-and-around the olive groves and forest. The interiors are an eclectic mix of Tuscan and Indonesian treasures collected by the family. Vicarello was one of the first farms in the area to focus on biological production and has been so for over 25 years; wine, olive, fruit and vegetables. Also, the property manages its own organic meats: pork, beef and wild game.
Castello di Vicarello lies in the heart of the Maremma region of Tuscany, where ancient traditions are still practiced, and where Tuscan culture is well-preserved. In ancient times, Maremma was isolated from the rest of the world, cut off by extensive marshlands and “briganti” (robbers). The region has now become an ideal holiday destination. The surrounding areas are also home to an unspoiled nature reserve and boast incomparable landscapes, including sea-pine forests, beaches and rolling hills.
