History & Story
An ancient watchtower originally used by the Knights of Malta and carefully restored respecting old shapes and original materials to become a fortified farmstead. A sober and austere building perfectly integrated into its natural surroundings that came back to life as a residence for the Melpignano family and later on turned into a pole of attraction for the international tourism routes.
Masseria San Domenico lies only 500 metres from the Adriatic coast in the Puglia region of Italy, its whitewashed building standing amidst centenarian olive groves. The building itself goes back to the 15th century, when it was used by the Knights of Malta as a watch-tower. Keeping intact the original structure of the “masseria”, it was lovingly restored in the early 1990s and opened as a 5 star boutique-style hotel in 1996.
The centrepiece of the hotel is undoubtedly the magnificent irregular-shaped swimming pool encircled by rocks and plants, which stands amidst 100 hectares of olive groves and orchards. The pool is filled with naturally-filtered seawater, reflecting the philosophy of the hotel’s thalassotherapy Spa.
Accommodations comprise a choice of 40 atmospheric rooms and suites, each of them tastefully furnished in a traditional style and with views over the lush estate and the Adriatic Sea in the distance.
As well as the outdoor swimming pool the hotel has a beach, two tennis courts, a modern gym, sauna, steam bath and a 18-hole golf course.
Recently opened, the dependence San Domenico a Mare features four spectacular deluxe rooms overlooking the Adriatic and a fine dining seafood restaurant, La Nassa.
