NH COLLECTION GRAND HOTEL CONVENTO DI AMALFI
History & Story
The complex was built at the beginning of the 13th century and was recorded in 1214 as a priory owned by Cistercian monks; it became an abbey in 1223. In 1583 the monastery was entrusted to the Capuchin Friars who remained there for more than two centuries and carried out a vast restoration and reconstruction project. After the Friars were expelled in 1813, the complex was turned over to the Archbishop of Amalfi who first used it as a dining hall and later entrusted it to private parties which turned it into an inn. The community council of Amalfi converted it into a Nautical Institute in 1866. In 1885 the monastery was used as a hotel for the first time.

Part of the ancient abbey, the Cloister and the Church are a treasure well preserved between lemon tree terraces and lush gardens. The sacred and the profane harmoniously coexist in a unique Mediterranean setting. Only after the Pope imposition and the promise of forthcoming funds, in June 1214, the Prior and eight monks, took possession of the “Canonica”.
Despite its incredible location, the property was used as a Nautical Schood for more than twenty years, from 1866.
Today Kyūshū, the Restaurant of the property, signed by Julian Marmol, represents the point where two distant cultures –Japanese and European – blend together, donating to our guests an extraordinary dining experience: the high Japanese cuisine with touches of Mediterranean-Italian taste.
The name of the restaurant is particular and says it all: Kyūshū is an island situated in the south of Japan, considered the cradle of Japanese civilization and characterized by the presence of a particular climate. Due these reasons, the island is also named the “Naples of Orient”.
