Main Strengths, Special Touch
Owner and designer Jeanette Thottrup took a holistic approach to designing the hotel’s interiors and gardens, with an esthetic vision firmly rooted in the feel of a space. Each room and suite evokes an individual atmosphere that recounts a story, with custom-sought antique pieces, bespoke beds and frescoes executed by hand.
GardensThirteen acres of up liftinga romas and bliss fulvistasis a potent tonic for well being – and that’s before being invited to sample the estate’s bio dynamic harvest or yielding to a massage amongst the herbgardens, using extracts from plants grown on site.
Situated in the heart of Tuscany, Relais Borgo Santo Pietro was once a healing stop over for medieval pilgrims. Today it merges a luxury five-star boutique hotel and spa concept with a ‘farm to plate’ philosophy on a 200-acre estate.
When Jeanette and Claus Thottrup bought Borgo in 2001, the villa was a ruin and the gardens nothing more than desolate fields of mud.
The Thottrup strucked in 300,000 plants and got to work. It took a seven-year labour of love before the hotel opened its doors as a world-class retreat, the thirteenth-century villa restored to its former glory and set amongst 13 acres of magnificent formal gardens. More than 15 years later, Borgo has grown into a flourishing 200-acre estate with a Michelin-starred restaurant, bespoke cooking school, bio dynamic culinary gardens, a working farm, native wood land and fields of vineyards rolling out to the horizon.
